OBITUARY

MR. WILLIAM SWALE PROMINENT SOUTHLAND FARMER [BY TELEGRAPH- —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL, Wednesday The death occurred at his residence, Limehills, last night of Mr. William Swale, one of Southland's most prominent farmers, at the age of 64 years. He was well known as a buyer and exporter of fat stock and his farm is one of tha finest properties in the province. Mr. Swalo was a director of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral,, Association and was a prominent exhibitor at shows. For many years ho was a member of the committee of the Southland Racing Club .and at the time of his death was president of the Winton Racing Club, a trustee of the Winton racecourse and a member of the Southland district committee. He was also a successful owner. Mr. Swale was a member of the Awarua Licensing Committee, of the Land Purchase Board, appointed by the Government in 1919, and chairman of Dolierty's Lime Works Company. He was unmarried. MR. J. Mr. Joseph John Hiskens, who died at Norfolk Island on December 18, was born in Christchurch on August' 29, 1865. His parents arrived at Lyttelton, from London, in the ship Glenmark in January of that year. On leaving school he learned the business of chemist and druggist at Timaru, and followed that occupation throughout the whole of his business life. For many years he resided at Invercargill, where he owned a flourishing business and filled several public positions. Retiring some ten years ago he lived for a time at Raupara, Marlborough. After the death of his wife ho moved to Wellington. Of recent years the charm of Norfolk Island captivated Mr. Hiskens. Of his grown-up' family of ten, two sons daughter's reside in various parts of New Zealand. Two daughters died some years ago. There are several grandchildren. A member of the Masonic craft, he attained Grand Lodge rank in 1904. In his younger days bowls and chess were his pastimes. Something of 9. coincidence attended his passing. In 1865 he was christened in the Methodist Church, Christchurch, by the late Rev-. Rains ford Bavin." Nearly 68 yearns later ho was buried, on Norfolk Island, by a ftoa-in-law of that clergyman —the Rev* Ambrose Fletcher., y..v.
