mer carnival was continued, was notable ' for the failure of first favourites, whose only return was two second dividends, tfo'ne of the other six first favourites even

Although under such circumstances the dividends were substantial, ' tonly one, returned by Psychologist in the Waitemata Handicap, ran into double figures, and the next largest price was paid by Merry Damon in the Plunket Handicap. Fine weather conditions prevailed and the track was fast. Good times were recorded, the best being Antique's 2m 6s jn winning the Summer Cup, 1A miles, and La Moderne's lm 37s in winning the King's 1 mile. The attendance was 9500, compared Trith 11,000 on the second day last year. The totalisator handled £31,735, compared •with £36,111 10s on the corresponding day a year ago, a decrease of £4376 10s, or 12 per cent. For the two days of the meeting so far the total is £94.257, against £107,749 10s, a decrease of £13,492 10s, or 12 per cent. Results: —

Parsons). ■ - ■ Thespis, Carfex and Lordly Knight were first to move from a good start, Lordly Knight being in front at the seven furlongs ; post from Carfex, "Detrain, ■" Thespis and Aga Khan, who were bunched ahead of Sammy, Holly Lu and Ruling King. Delrain joined Lordly Knight in the lead in the second furlong and at - the top they were out two lengths from Aga Khan (rails), Holly Lu, Carfex and Thespis, who were racing abreast-, with Sammy and Ruling King nest. Lordly Knight and Delrain were still the leaders entering the straight, closely followed by Aga Khan and. Holly Lu, with Sammy running up on the outside ahead of Carfex and Thespis. Aga Khan came along with a strong run at the distance and scored by/a length and a-quarter from Delrain, who beat Lordly Knight by half a length. Tea Trader held command after going a furlong and led alopg the back from Golden "Wings and La Moderne (rails), who were together, with Cadland, Pillow Fight and Silver Ring in a bunch another three lengths back. Cadland went on the fence near the five furlongs post and lost his position. Tea Trader just led La Moderno • and Golden* Wings at the half-mile, where Pillow Fight was heading the others about four lengths away and Gadlan'd struck a v little further trouble. Bon Rapide went back quickly at this stage and checked Fracas, who was following. Dole was still in front at the distance, where Impasto and Pelagia were challenging strongly, and he went on to win handsomely ioy two and a-half lengths from Impasto. Marching Song and Sunny Bachelor were the leaders along the back from Grand Spirit, Belltopper, Psychologist, Master Brierly, Roxy and Jonathan. Sunny Bachelor dropped back at the six furlongs and Psychologist moved up to Marching Song. Passing the five_ furlongs Master Brierly also improved his position and he was up in the lead with Marching Song and Psychologist at the half-mile, where Belltopper, Knight of Australia, Roxy, Gay Broney and Sunny Bachelor were next. Dole has bi»en scratched for the Midsummer Handicap. JOCKEY'S FALL LUCKY ESCAPE FROM INJURY The jockey R. C. Miles received a nasty fall while riding Captain's Gift in the Ponsonby Hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday, but fortunately escaped serious injury. He appeared to be struck by another horse as he lay on the ground, hut happily such was not, the case. Miles was dazed for the time being, but. soon recovered and was soon able to get about again. TWO INQUIRIES HELD The judicial committee of the Auckland Racing Club held two inquiries in connection with incidents in the racing at Fillerslie yesterday. The first concerned interference with Cadland in the King's Plate and the second regarding interference with Fracas in the Criterion Handicap. No action was taken in either case.
