ALLEGED INCITEMENT

MEN OF AUSTRALIAN NAVY

(Received November 21. 7.n p.m.) MELBOURNE. Nov. 24

William Arthur Payne, printer and publisher of Melbourne Truth, was charged in tho Civil Court, under the Commonwealth Crimes Act to-day, with having incited members of the crews of tho warships Australia, Canberra, Albatross, Tattoo and other ships to mutiny. Tho secretary of tho Naval Board, Mr. G. L. Macandie, said tho men on tho warships Jiad accepted their cuts in pay loyally. Ho and also tho Minister of l)e----fence, Sir George l'earce, and the first naval member, Vice-Admiral Hyde, stated that no ultimatum was ever made by the men in the form of a threat, to strike unless their grievances wero redressed. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Ho said he did not write tho article and had not known of its publication. Ho was acquitted by the jury arid discharged.

This was the first trial of its kind in Australia.
