IMPRISONMENT FOR LIFE

Franz Leitgoeb, the Austrian "Bluebeard," was sentenced to day to imprisonment, for life. Ho admitted having murdered seven women.
After sentence was passed tho man tried to commit suicide by jumping out of a window.
Crowds of people liavo since besieged the prison demanding the death penalty, though it has been abolished in Austria.
Franz Leitgoeb, a butcher, aged 53, was arrested early in March at Linz on suspicion of murdering a builder's wife, Louisa Janks. Ho admitted his guilt. Tho crimo was described as the most horrible in the history of Austria. Leitgoeb also confessed to murdering his grandmother in 1920 and five other women since then. Two of tho victims wero found dead in bod and their deaths wero attributed to misadventure. Accused said he strangled them.
Later the man admitted having killed two other women in 1916 and 1920 and having burned their bodies. The police recalled ihp. mysterious deaths of a number of other women, who were strangled and robbed of money and jewellery. They endeavoured to trace theso deaths also 1o Leitgoeb. He had served 13 sentences for robberv.
