FUGITIVES TO JAPAN
SENT BACK TO EXECUTION

Public interest has been aroused in the rase of 21 White Russians who escaped from detention camps on the coast of the maritime province m small fishing boats, in which they landed at Hokkaido after great, hardships. They were placed under heavy guard at Hakodate while the local authorities negotiated with tho Soviet representative and agreed to the lattei s demand to repatriate them. The fugitives protested, asking for thendeportation to Manchuria. The Nationalist leader, Mr. Iwata, belonging to tho Nippon Patriotic Society, pleaded vainly with tho Home Office, which refused to interfeFventually the fugitives were shipped 0 „ a Soviet steamer for Vladivostok. Ihc Hokkaido authorities were shocked on hearing that tho deportees will be shot on their arrival in Soviet territory.
