EXPLOSION IN SHOP

FILLING A SPIRIT LAMP

PIANO TUNER BURNED

BRIGADE SUBDUES FIRE

Burns to the right arm and side were received by Mr. Kobin Campbell Wood, aged 23, a piano turier, when a methylated spirits lamp he was filling exploded in the shop of Mr. Arthur Bree in Wellesley Street West about four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Wood, who resides at 91 Jervois Road, Heme Bay, was partly covered with burning spirit when the lamp exploded and bis clothing immediately commenced to smoulder. Several people in the shop left to obtain help, but before they returned Mr. Wood had wrapped himself iu a blanket that happened to be lying handy, and extinguished the flames. The injured man was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance. His condition last evening was not serious. The spirit from the. burning lamp was scattered in the room in which Mr. Wood was working and some pieces of rag were ignited as a result. The City Fire Brigade was summoned and suppressed the flames with first-aid equipment before they had gained a strong hold. The only damage was to a small number of gramophone records.
