EPSOM TRACK WORK

SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES

LITTLE GUY'S TWO MILES

USEFUL SPRINT BY BENEFICE

BY ABAYDOS

The early birds at Epsom yesterday had the benefit of dry conditions for training operations, when the dirt track was firm and fast. After breakfast rain set in and made the footing a trifle dead. Most of the work was done the reverse way round. Little Gtiy (F. J. Smith) ran two miles in 4.40, the last half-mile in 1.6. He finished with dash and his effort was pleasing. Benefice (K. Morrison), after working steadily over three circuits free-legged, was hoppled up and ran a mile in 2.18 3-5. the last half in 1.6. She revelled in her task. F. J. Smith will drive her in the Farewell Handicap at Hamilton.

Carnui (M. Morrison). Modern Light (C. Smith) and Pegaway (F. J. Smith) went away in that order from the mile and a-half poat and at tho end Pegaway was on terms with Carnui, whoso time was 3.37. while Modern Light was almost in lino. Pegawav ran his last half-mile in 1.6. going very smoothly. Pedlar (L. Laver) worked usefully over a mile and a-half in 3.37 3-5. • accompanied by Rolfe Audubon (A. J. Julian), who was unhoppled. Pedlar has made a good recovery from injuries resulting from a fall on tho road, and ran his last half-mile in 1.7 3-5. Dan Direct ran two miles in 4.49,-assisted by Great Fame over tho first mile and a-half in 3.40. The slow' pace in the earlx staees suited Dan Direct, who finished strongly. Nelson Taskcr (W. Brain), unhoppled. went away in front of Peterwah (F. J. Smith), and after covering a mile and a-half in 3.51 was two lengths clear, but at the end was only a head in front in 5.2. Peterwah, without being hurried, ran his la3t half in 1.9 3-5.

Nellota (L. Mitchell) ran two miles in sinin., the last six furlongs in I.4GJ, a 2.22 milo gait. Carl Mack (I. R. Morrison) was not seriously tested while trotting two miles at approximately a 2.30 milo clip, the last halfmile in 1.10.

Glandore's Steady Work Glandore (A. McGarry) ran a mile and a-quarter steadily in 2.59, the last half in 1.10. He paced freely and displayed more keenness than usual when working alone. Kewpie's Triumph (K. Bell) was let off with a medium-pace mile and a-half effort in 3.40. Ho showed some dash over tho last three furlongs in 535. Guid Hairst (F. J. Smith) displayed a lot of dash at the finish of a mjjo and a-half in 3.33J,. iho last half in 1.74. He will fulfil his Hamilton engagements. La Triumph (J. Shaw) did not begin well when despatched on a mile and a-half journey with Autumn Lu (G. Stubbs), but soon caught up, and. trotting beautifully, had no trouble in holding the upper hand over the last mile in 2.29. La Triumph was kept very wido out. otherwise her time would have been much better.

Cimarron (I. R. Morrison) paced in fine style over three circuits, running the first, six furlongs in 1.42. Cimarron, who did not go correctly in hiß work for a week or two after the Auckland meeting, has settled down again, and. unless present intentions are altered, will accompany Carl Alack -to Hamilton next week. Moko Girl (W. T. Dye) gave a neat exhibition of trotting over a mile and a-half. showing plenty of dash over the last half in 1.10.

Mazda (F. J. Smith) covered a mile and a-quarter in 2.59. running the last half-mile resolutely in 1.7.

, Wee Machine (E. S. Groat) and Realtv (M. K. Groat) were given a useful work-out over a mile and a-half without the straps. Both paced in good style, but were not asked to go faster than a 2.30 gait for the last half-mile. Mar garet Wallace (E. G. Sandall). unhopplod. had no difficulty in runninc a mile and five furlongs at a 2.30 mile Bait. She was keen to do better and is in creat heart.

Dye) was not out. for timo while trotting a mile and a-half at a 2.36 mile rate, but displayed solidness and appears to be getting cured of hi 3 breaking habits.

Nell Volo (F. ,T. Smith) and Prince Etavrah (R. A. Shepherd) went away from the mile and a-half post well clear Qf Pageant (C. Smith!, and the trotter held the nacers to the finish in 3.46. running her last halfmile in 1.11. Paseant covered the distance in 3.42, the last half in 1.0. Although treated to a spell after the Auckland meeting, he has not put on the condition anticipated bv his southern owner. 11. Stafford. Mountain Dell (L. Mitchell) was given a steady task for three circuits, sprinting home the last three furlongs very smartly in 49is. The long spell in the paddock has evidently benefited her considerably.

JEWEL POINTER'S FOALS

The extension of the limit of til? Auckland Cup to 4.32 and of the fast mile and a-qunrter handicap to 2.46 has caused Mr. D. Brideson to give up the idea of preparing Jewel Pointer for racing again. Mr. Brideson stated yesterday that Jewel Pointer was in great heart and was keeping in splendid condition by training himself in the paddock. He could again be got fit for racing if there were any races to suit him. So for this season eix mares have foaled to Jewel Pointer, the issue being four colts and two fillies, as follows:—Harvest Home. Bell Boy mare. Great Audubon mare, and Guy Parrish mare, all colts; .Halgana and Ursuline. fillies. Harvest Home ie proving a successful brood mare, having produced to The Triumph, Commodore Jack and Guid Hnirst, to Nelson Bingen a colt who is being prepared by E. N. Kennerley at Te Awamutu for next season's Derby, to Jewel Pointer, the coal, which Mr. Brideson states is the best looking of her progeny at the age.
