FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD
The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of November 25, 1882:
Now that the weather is becoming warmer, the young people of the city are resorting to the city baths. Last year, they were sometimes inconveniently crowded, and an extension is urgently needed. The women ire also availing themselves of their privileges, by mustering in force at the hours when the baths are set apart for their exclusive use.
The attempts to, work the Gaming and Lotteries Act reveal its peculiar character. The instrument called the totalisator is strictly legislated against, and all police officers are enjoined to seize these instruments and destroy them. But another section provides that the instruments may be used on a racecourse on the application of a racing club. Why the {otalisator should be licensed in one place and prohibited in another is hard to see. The worst form of gambling, betting with bookmakers, escapes untouched.
