VISITING FARMERS' TOUR
TWO DAYS IN SOUTH ISLAND
PROTEST IN CANTERBURY
[by telegraph—own correspondent]
CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday
A complaint, t.hat the Tourist Department did not consider that the South Island was "on the m;ip" was made by Mr. C. Mcintosh, president of the North Canterbury Farmers'. Union, at a meeting this week of the union executive. Mr. Mcintosh made this comment in reference to the forthcoming tour of New Zealand by a party of Australian farmers, which was reported to be spending only two days, January 22 and 23, in the South Island, both days in Christchurch. "It is not worth their while coming to the South Island at all," said Mr. Mcintosh. "For the Tourist Department the South Island is just an outlying centre. These farmers are from an Australian district "here the principal product is wheat, and the land is very like that of Canterbury. We should learn from them and they from us." The question of co-operating with the department in. entertaining the visitors was deferred for later consideration.
