UNEMPLOYED PROBLEM
PROPOSALS AT OTAHUHU
CITIZENS* WELFARE LEAGUE
A suggestion that the Unemployment Board should be requested to grant exemption from the payment of the next quarter's unemployment levy to all men who had been on relief works for over 12 months, was approved by the Otahuhu Citizens' Welfare League on Wednesday evening.
Members stated that as total exemption was probably out of the question, in the meantime the Unemployment Board should at least grant some concession to men whose resources had been depleted by extended unemployment. A resolution was unanimously adopted for submission to the Unemployment Board. The chairman, Mr. H. T. Clements, Mayor of Otahuhu, said that, following representations to the jUiiiister of Employment, a further allocation for relief workers under the No. 5 scheme had been received for the present and following week. Instead of a 10 per cent reduction the actual allocation had approximated 20 per cent, and it was due partly to the Unemployment Board making allocutions on returns a fortnight ahead of requirements. After discussion it was decided to endeavour to Jiavo the board make allocations on up-to-date returns and so obviate excessive reductions in rates.
A resolution was adopted requesting the Unemployment Board to endeavour to grant all relief workers at least, one extra day's employment between now and the holidays.
The chairman was authorised to confer with all other social organisations and bodies in the borough with the view to organising a Christmas treat for the children of unemployed workers.
