PENALTY ON RATES
A MONTH'S RESPITE
CITY' COUNCIL DECISION
'As a result of pleas by several councillors, tlfe City Council decided last evening that the 10 per cent penalty on overdue rates should not he enforced at the earliest until January 16 next instead of December 16, the commencing date originally proposed. The Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, remarked that as mi economy measure this year he had successfully endeavoured to liave the rate notices issued about a month earlier than usual. If the proposal were adopted the council would have to find n month's interest on several hundred thousand pounds. "I think we should try to get in the Christmas money before they spend it at the New Year races," ho reinarked,' amid laughter. After some good-luimoured discussion Mr. Hutchison said he would not oppose the delay if the council really wanted it, and an amendment was carried accordingly* In the ordinary course the penalty becomes due six months and 14 days after the date of the individual demand.
