VINES INJURES ARM
OVER-USE OF FAST SERVICE
H. Ellsworth Vines, the world's champion tennis player, disclosed to a Sydney newspaper representative last week that he was suffering from an injury to a muscle in the upper part of his right arm caused, he believes, through overuse of his cannonball service in his match against V. B. McGrath. It had been noticed that Vines had not played in his best form since the Now South Wales championships began. He had not used his cannonball services until the last game of the doubles, when he and Gledhill were in danger of defeat by B. Moore and D. Thompson, two young local players. His strong forehand drive had rarely been employed. Vines met McGrath a few days after he had completed a long sea voyage, and bis muscles had scarely beon atuned for tho strenuous opposition bo met with from McGrath. Ho therefore was forced to uso the cannonball service much more frequently than was anticipated, and on one occasion, when trying for moro paco, he injured a muscle, in liis upper arm.
In his match with J. Crawford, Vines was again thoroughly extended, and onco again he was forced to resort to his "devastating service to save the match, With the result that tho muselo was further injured. Vines put up with tho discomfort and worry, but he acknowledged that it was giving him trouble, and Was preventing him from showing his best form.
