OBITUARY

MR. J. H. CARRINGTON

[by telegraph-—OWN correspondent] TAUMARUNUI, Tuesday The death has occurred of Mr. James Henry Carrington, aged 73, a pioneer of Jaumarunui. Mr. Carrington was born in Cornwall and came to New Zealand 68 years ago. ITe resided in Dunedin and later at Eketahuna, where lie built several sawmills before coming to Taumarunui 27 years ago. Mr. Carrington carried oil business as a builder and contractor in Taumarunui and retired in 1919; 11® took a keen interest in local politics and was elected a member of the first Taumarunui Maori Council. He is sunned by his wife, three sons and three daughters.

SIR. JOHN EVANS

[BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ( THAMES, Tuesday

An old resident, of Colville, Sir.' John Evans, died at the Coroniandel Hospital last week. Ho was born at Colvillo 65 years ago, and with the exception of a short period spent at Puriri, had resided there all his life. In his younger days he was a well-known figuro in tho kauri bushes and was recognised as one of the best dam builders in the North Island. Sir. Evans was a man of sterling character. The funeral at tho Colville* demctery was tlio largest ever seen in the district. Sir. Evans is survived by his wife, seven daughters and two sons.
