ATR PILOT'S ENGAGEMENT

LARGE ISLAND PURCHASED

An interesting romance developed during tho voyage of the Mariposa from Sydney to Auckland. On the liner's arrival yesterday it was announced that Miss Mary Lennie, of Island Bay, Wellington, had become engaged to Mr. R. T. tlichards, the young Englishman who piloted Lady Chaytor on her flight from England to Australia la;Jt March. Ihe jroung couple were travelling together on the steamer, Miss Lennie returning to New Zealand from a visit to Australia And Mr. Richards proceeding to Los Angeles en route to England. Lady Chaytor was also a passenger on the liner. She is going to America. Since his long flight from England, Mr. Richards has been doing a great deal of flying in Australia. He met Miss Lenme in.Melbourne, where he learned that he tvould be a fellow passenger with her 6n the Mariposa to Auckland.

As a result of his flying experience m Australia, Mr. Richards has become greatly impressed with the farming potentialities of the Northern Territory and he recently purchased Melville Island, with fcn area of 2000 square miles, which lies lo the north of Darwin. There he intends to establish a large sheep and cattle itation. The island is also suitable for ihe growing of a large variety of tropical produce. Mr. Richards said he was proceeding to England to make final arrangements in tonnection with the purchase of the island. Ho hoped the marriage would take place tin his return.

Lady Chaytor, who has been lecturing Jound the world with the object of raising money to enable her family to resume residence in Witton Castle, Durham, said she was perfectly satisfied with the financial Results of her tour of New Zealand and Australia. During the past 12 weeks she travelled 14,000 miles in Australia and lectured to over 50,000 people. She spoke in grateful terms of tho hospitality she had received in Australia and New Zealand.
