EFFECT OF POSTPONEMENT

(Received November 21, 9.45 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 21 The Times states that there is no need to take tragically the hitch whereby the meeting of tho Economic Conference is postponed until April or possibly later. More harm than good would be done by holding the conference before the participating Governments made up their minds what was practicable.

' The experts' work at Geneva had been concerned with facilitating the woiking of international finance, but they failed to realise that economic internationalism was no less dangerous than economic nationalism. Industrial countries like Britain, France and Germany could not let agriculture be ruined.

It is understood that the proposed World Economic- Conference is not likely to meet before April —if at all. An extraordinary situation has arisen at Geneva, where the preparatory monetary committee suddenly adjourned and separated, some members returning to America, without any prospect of their early re-

assembling. It will be recalled that Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald, chairman-elect, urged that the conference should open in January at the latest, which would have enabled it to be concluded before the war debts discus-

sions came on. The fact that there is now difficulty in convening the conference before April possibly will render it useless, particularly because it is essential that the war debt discussions take place early in 1933.
