NOTES ON THE RACING

BELL TOPPER'S FINE FINISH

IMPASTO WINS DECISIVELY

HIGH-WEIGHT TO CHIEF JOY

BY ARCHER

Tlie three-year-old Bell Topper was installed a good favourito for the Frankton Handicap and he duly scored, although 1c just got up in the last couple of strides to win by half a head. Bell Topper was more favoured in the draw for barrier positions than on Saturday, having No. 1 instead of No. 10, and he was also assisted by having a stronger horseman in tho saddle. His chance did not ayjpcar too bright when ho v;as Inst before reaching the turn, but lie came with a fine run in the straight, and thoroughly deserved his victory. Arawa Rose and Chateau both displayed improvement and the latter appeared certain to win when he was still clear passing the distance. However, ho weakened in tho last 50 yards and was relegated to third place just on tho post. Tho Pullet displayed plenty of speed and hung on fairly well at the finish. Whirlalong struck Borne trouble when in a good position at the top and that affected her chance. Blanford and Foreign Money both ran fair races and Loombination was again finishing on. Another favourite was successful in the Clarkin Hack Handicap when Prolyxo, who was at odds-on, just prevailed in a hot finish with Merry Lap, tho second choice, and Limex. Prolyxo was splendidly handled by Voitre and the fact that she kept to tho rails all tho way proved a great factor in her success. One of the most pleasing features of her performance was tho courageous manner in which she fought on under pressure at tho end.

Merry Lap ran another good race. lie did not have as good a run as the winner, having to travel on the outside, and only for that ho may liavo beaten Prolyxo. Liraex had a fine run until reaching the distance, but she was then stopped when endeavourins to get through on the rails, and had to change her course to the outside. She did better than both Prolyxo and Merry Lap over tho last half-furlong, but was not quito ablo to reach them. Holly Holin was running on at the end, but King Win tirod after showing a bold front to the distance. Imamint also weakened in tho last furlong, but Valpai again shaped creditably.

The Two-year-old Contest

Showing improvement for his raco on the first day, Impasto scored a ready victory in the Ruakura Stakes, for which he was a good second fancy to Gay Sheila. Beginning quickly, Impasto never had any difficulty in holding the lead, and he had the opposition well beaten at the finish. He is an attractive galloper, possessed of tine physique, and he should be in the top flight before the season is much further advanced. Gay Seton again raced solidly, but ho had no chance with his better-looking stablemate.

Gay Sheila made a respectable showing without ever appearing to have a chance with the winner. She was outside a couple of horses most of the way, otherwise she may have been a trifle closer. Enjoyment battled on solidly, but was not quite brilliant enough for the placegettcrs. Bonny Gay and Pelagia both displayed speed, but failed to run on at tho finish.

Speedmint and L'Allegro were the favourites for the Hamilton Handicap and they filled tho dividend-places in reverse order. L'Allegro reached the front quickly and he rolled into his work in his usual honest fashion to score a well-deserved victory. Over the last furlong he had to withstand a determined challenge from Speedmint, but he answered all demands, and just held her off. Speedmint finished gallantly, but was not quito good enough at the weights. Refresher ran another solid race. He looked as if he might win when ho made a sharp move just 'after reaching the straight, but could not sustain his effort, although ho stnyed on well enough to get third. Lirueen came from a long way back to secure fourth position, but Baroscope retired in the straight after appearing a likely placegetter at the turn. Eager Rose, Volimond and Bronze Tray were never dangerous. Outsider's Win in Hurdles

Trowbridge, seventh fancy in a field of eight, was responsible for a surprise in winning the Mittangi Hurdles after a keen tussle with Welcome Boy, who was ridden in behind and stayed on much better than on tho first day. Trowbridge was well back early when Carl Ilertz was forcing the pace, but he ran up second after Welcome Boy had taken tho lead six furlongs from home. In the straight he and Welcome Boy raced neck and neck and bo just prevailed at the end. . . ,11 The favourite, High Commissioner, failed to show the dash expected and never gave any serious trouble, although ho battled on to set third. Emancipation was going well until lie struck the fence near the six furlongs post, where his rider appeared to lose one of his' irons. Ho then dropped right back, but stayed on at tho end to "°t fourth. The others were well beaten. Carl Hertz and Mangu King both stopping badly at tlio end and finishing in tho rear. Gay Marigold was not quito as well fancied as Glenvane for tho Waikato Hack Cup, but she confirmed her first day's form by again scoring handsomely. It w j} a ,, a pleasing performance on tho part of tho three-year-old filly, for she led all the .way and gavo nothing a chance in the straight. Although she lacks size. Gay Mangold carried lier rise in weight of lllb in jjreat Bl (rlenriita and Lady Lulu both ran on ver.v cram el y «*t the end, hut the unlucky liQisfs was Master Briefly. Ho failed to jump out well and failed the field until the homo turn, v;hcro lie commenced a fmc run on the outside. Ho maintained his effort m game fashion, but the effort was ]ust too great and he could not quite reach tho placegctters. Glenvane had every chance and at tho turn appeared likely to win. but could not go on under Ins weight in the straight. Bugle Call was outside two horses all the way and then faded only in the last furlong.

Tea Trader's Clear-cut Victory

Tho three-year-old Tea Trader was sent out a hot favourite for the Kirikiritoa Handicap and ho justified tho confidence reposed in him by making an cx.noition ot the field. Beginning from tho extreme outside he took about a furlong to reach the "front, but he then. streaked away and had the field in trouble before reaching the turn Tea Trader came round tho turn better than usual and he is apparently better suited by left-handed courses than the reverse way of going, as ho is inclined to hang a little when going right-handed. Pagauelli managed to keep within a few lengths of Tea Trader until reaching the straight, but tho effort left him wanting at tho finish and Gay Lap just got. up to cut him out of second. Gay Lap appeared it trifle sore after the race but lie should not be long in coming back to form if he stands up to his work. The others were outclassed and woro never in the picture. Soloist was a pronounced favourite over Trishna and Chief Joy for the Janwhare High-Weight Handicap, but lie fai'cd o Enish closer than a moderate fifth. Some excuse is available for Sn o.st because he struck trouble when handily placed on the nils after "oing two furlongs, and that adversely affected his chaf.cc. He ran up again on the rails at the top. but appeared to be checked again at tho turn, where he diopped 'race was notable for tho return to winning form of Chief -Toy, who displayed some improvement upon his recent lunning. and just won. He was favoured with a particularly good run and that proved a, factor in his success, as Gay Idea would piobubly havo beaten him if she had received a better passage. Gay Idea was sent back when Trishna. moved up at the top. and she then had to make her run on tho outside rounding tho turn. Chief Joy gavo R K. Bagby his fourth training success at tho meeting

GIVING AWAY HANDICAP

ENTRY OF GRAND TRIUMPH

BY ABAYDOS

Mthou"h the Auckland-owned _ trotter Grand Triumph is still in the novice class and entitled to the limit of the slowest class race on any programme, lie, has been accorded an entry at Waikato in the Waipa Handicap, a trotting event with a J.'Sa limit. Grand Triumph is reported to be exceptionally speedy on the tracks at le Awamutu, but so far _ has failed to reproduce anything approaching the same form in his races, and if ho cannot win. off a o.du mark, it is difficult to see him having any chance in a much higher grade race. It may be with the idea of giving the trotter as much racing as possible, that lie has been flattered with such an entry, but it would prove a very expensive experiment it, through any set of circumstances Grand Triumph ran into second place and established n 3.38 mark without having won oL a 3.50 limit Grand Triumph may improve in solidness with racing, and in timo may develop into ft useful performer.
