ONEHUNGA BASIN

EXPLANATION BY MAYOR

" In order to ease the minds of the ratepayers and residents of Onehunga ; I will give the true position regarding the discussion of the lay-out of Geddos Basin, which took place at the last meeting of the Onehunga-Manukau Chamber of Commerce," says Mr. E. Morton, Mayor of Onehunga, in a letter to the Herald. " Ten years ago an estimate of £IO,OOO was to complete the following work: — Roadway across the mouth of the basin in concrete, swimming baths, and general lay-out, and-not £14,000 as reported. But things have changed since then: The roadway is practically three-parts finished and is a much longer road than the original one, and so far has not cost the borough £IOO. At the same time, it has provided work for the unemployed. " When the roadway is completed the matter of laying out the other work will be in the hands of those administering the affairs of the borough, and I trust, whoever they may be, that they will stick to the idea of a recreation and sports ground where the people can go and enjoy themselves throughout the year. If it was a lake it would be used for about four or five months, and would not bring in revenue like a sports ground. Land is of value, salt water would not be.

" The report suggests consulting an engineer in connection with the work, but I would like to point out that this work is of a very simplo nature and is in capable hands. No largo sums of money are likely (o be spent on this work."
