WAIKATO RACES

EXCITING CUP FINISH

refresher just wins

SPRINT TO PAGANELTjT

TOTALISATOR INCREASE

The course was fast and the weather fine, apart, from a light shower before the last, race, for the opening of the Waiknto Racing Club's Spring Meelinrr at Te Rapa on Saturday, when some excellent contests were witnessed. There was a particularly exciting finish in the Waikato Cup and the three placed horses flashed past the post almost in line, the judge declaring in favour of Refresher, who was in the middle, by a nose from Knight of Australia and Bronze Tray, who dead-heated for second.

Only two favourites, Prince of Orange nnd Gay Seton, were successful, but with the exception of Merry Lap and Mungatoon, who were at good prices, the winners were all well supported. Prince of Orange had a very close call in the Waimai Hurdles and it was only in tho last couple strides that he got up to defeat Arcade, who appeared to have the race won when he landed over the last fence clear. Paganclli scored a very convincing win in the Cambridge Handicap, the open sprint race, and he outclassed the field that was weakened as a result of four scratchings. The attendance was good and the totalisator returns showed an increase of £2227, tho turnover amounting to £15,847 10s compared with £13,620 10s on tho corresponding day last year. Results: —
