RACING AT VARIOUS CLUBS

A strong wind down the harbour and an ebbing tide made very choppy conditions for rowing on Saturday and tho racing wai replete with instances of weary competitors arriving home with boats half full of water and themselves thoroughly drenched. Th» big event of the day was at the Auckland Ho wing Club's shed, where tho opening of the season was marked by an At Home and eight-oar racing with tho Wrtst End Club. St. George's made an excellent start to ths yeaf" with an "entry of eight crews, whil# members of tho Waitemata, Club also coaducted trials. -

MISHAPS HAMPER CREWS

The second, race for Mr. W. J. Hampton.' Reynolds' trophy between representatives of Auckland and "West End lost Diuc'a of it*. sparkle through the heavy head-on seas that troubled the crews over three-quarters of the distance. The eights were Auckland (holders), S. Scott fstroke), C. Chamberlain, R. K. Stacey, F. Heald, L. K. Hughes, W. Walker, F. Foote, A. McDonald; "West End, M. H. D. ,Cor.way (stroke), A. D. Dalton, J. Craies, F. Bowling, J. H. Donovan, N. W. Jerrome, D. G. Stotter, F. Conway. There was little between the eights for: some distance until the Auckland stroke had trouble with his seat. This was followed soon after by a "West End man having a ' similar experience. The Auckland eight were lost without Scott. West End drew away, but Scott became settled again and, setting a high speed, commenced to overhaul hi» rivals. West End kept Auckland og and won by one and a-half lengths.

The Auckland Rowing Ciub's shed in King's Drive was the scene of a crowded gathering at the club's At Home on Situr<lay. In welcoming those present, the club patron, Mr. G. R. Hogan, expressed pleasure at the good attendance and took the opportunity of introducing the president of the Auckland Rowing Association, Mr. H. W. Hudson. The president congratulated the club tipon its splendid position. During the afternoon Mr. Hogan presented Mr. G. Barrett with a gold stop watch in recognition of his services to the club. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies' committee, under the supervision of Mrs. A. Coutts. The Auckland Rowing Association v.-as represented by Messrs. A. C. Norden, H. H. N. Hilliard and J. E. H. Bisa. The crews in the eight-oar trials were:— S. Scott (stroke), C. Chamberlain, R. K. Stacey, F. Heald. L. K. Hughe3, W. Walker, F. Foote, A. McDonald; R. Porter (stroke), J. McComish, W. H. Haslett. D. Robinson, R. Leabourn. L. Rose, R. Wilson, T. Morton. Until the last stretch there was little between the crews, but Scott then drew away to win .by one and a-half lengths. Scott's eight met West End for the Hampton Reynolds trophy.

ST. GEORGE'S CLUB.

ROUSELL MEMORIAL CUP

The first race of St. George's Club thi* season was for the Roufell Memorial Cup. Owing to the bad seas the officers decided to use a short course from near the western gap to oS Campbell's Point.. Starting was by mutual consent, while Mr. H. H. N. Hilliard was judge. Crews in the first heat were:—C. D'Auth« reai:, J. Colebrook, M. McLaughlin, V. Dunne; J. R. H, Biss, J. Kay, A. Slyfield. B. Atkin; I. C. Horton, E. Kelleway, C. Hilliard. P. B. Levy, crew won by two lengths from Horton'a. The third four had trouble with a seat.

The second heat crews were:—W. Carr. G. Brown, V. Daviea, A. McElwain; W. Woolhouse, E. Kalaugher. W. Forte, W. Mason; L. Ball. G-. Biss, D. Woollams, B. N. Alpe. Thi3 was a good race, Carr beating Ball by half a length, with Woolhouse third. The crews boated in the third heat were: —H. Tone. A. Andrews, G. McCallnm, S. Price; F. G. Snedden, F. Solomon, D. Lanrford, R. Reid. Snedden held the lead throughout to win by three lengths. D'Authrean, Carr and Snedden were tna strokes in the final. After a false start tha crews hit a 6hort stroke through the tricky water. Snedden forced ahead, and 6oon after lost an oar, as did a -member of Can I crew,. Recovering, the first-named four went ahead again to beat Carr by two lengths, followed by D'Authrean a canvas away.

WAITEKATA CLUB

RACES FOR TROPHIES

Six crews of the Waitemata Boating Clnb took the water to contest trophies donated by Mr. H. Wright, vice-president. The club used the course from near the eastern g*P to off Campbell's Point. The starter wa» Mr. C. C. Cairns and the judge Mr. C. H. Hunt. The first heat crews were:—o. J. C. Mason. O. W. Denison, M. N. Pierce, S. W. Cook; G. L. Franks. R. G. Barker, J. P. Hooper. H. D. Craig; T. C. Conway, D. Smith, H. J. Lawrence, Coughlan. Mason won by two lengths from Franks, Conway being half a length away third. The entrants in the second heat were:— C. Thompson, L. N. Boss, G. Boss, B. Stables; V. Corbett, E. G. Ware.. J. P. Hooper, A. D. Copeland: R. Smith, N. Mnson, J. O'Hanlon, J. C. Swift. Thompson won by four lengths from Corbett. A member of Smith's crew lost his oar and tin crew retired. Smith's crew went in the final and met Mason and Thompson's fours. After a good race Mason beat Thompson by _ threequarters of a length. Smith was third 6ft. behind.

This was another close contest. way winning: by a length, Conway s ere met Auckland for the Hampton Reynold trophy.
