SUBURBAN MATCHES

SECOND SERIES COMMENCED

FIRST CENTURY OF SEASON

HONOUR FOR S. GUINIVEN

Tho second series of matches in the senior grade championship of the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association was commenced at the Domain on Saturday. Conditions were ideal, and considerably favoured the batting sides. High scoring all round was a feature of interesting cricket, and thero were several outstanding performances with the bat.

The honour of the first century of the season fell to S. Guiniven, of tho R.V. team, who played splendid cricket for 101. Others with good batting performances were P. Simpson (R.V.), 93 not out; W. llendy (Harbour Board), 01; N. Martin (Harbour Board), 81 not out; J. Lonergan (Ponsonby), 73; 11. limes (Ponsonby), 70; A. Dunning (Harbour Board), 55; 11. Hunt (R.V.), 54 not out. - In tho principal game R.V. put up a really good performance in scoring 417 for eight wickets in its first innings against Green Lane. So fust was tho scoring that the first hundred runs were made in exactly 68' minutes' play. Tho opening pair, Guiniven and Goldsworthy, forced the pace, and drew applause for beautifully placed shots. Guiniven was particularly good on tho off side, hi* driving being clean and powerful. Guiniven Passes Century

Goldsworthy gave a few chances in hitting at Kerr, but tho ball usually fell several feet short of the fieldsmen. He was eventually caught on tho boundary by Williams. Goldsworthy made 43, which included a six and five fours. Bamburg, 31, placed R.V. in a still sounder position, and when Cloke joined Guiniven the score was 217 for four. Guiniven readied his century after 84 minutes' batting, but after scoring another single ho was bowled by Gillespie. Ho had given a chanceless display. His strokes wero varied and characterised by excellent placing. His score included 15 fours.

Finlayson, 30, batted well, and hit four fours. The eighth-wicket partnership between Simpson and Hunt, the ex-Auck-land representative wicketkeeper, was a feature of R.V.'s innings. At this stage Green Lane's fielding was very poor, and 'ho team seemed to be without a leader. Apart from Kerr, the bowling standard was not high. Simpson, with 98 not out, severely punished the attack. He excelled with well-directed full shots, which frequently reached the boundary. Hunt, 54, look no risks, being content to score off the loose ones. The pair added 152, which is probably a record for Suburban cricket for an eighth-wicket partnership. At stumps R.V. had scored 417 for eight wickets. Unusual Dismissal Harbour Board was fortunate fo win the toss from Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, and had the use of a wicket and outfield conducive to run getting. Breese, 34, and R. StaUworthy, 16, gave Harbour Board a good start. Stalhvorthy played delightful cricket, and he was run out in a most unusual manner. He drove hard at one from Mills and a boundary looked certain. Stallworthy, however, did not notice the ball hit a wicket-keeper on an adjoining pitch. Breese. however, saw the incident and, with both batsmen at one end,'Stallworthy was easily run out. Hendv joined Breese, and the lastnamed was bowled soon afterwards by Mills. Breese scored with some fine shots through the. covers. Hendy and Wetherill forced the pace, but Wetherill was caught by Lange off Ott, after scoring 15. Hendy was in good form, scoring with well-placed shots all round the wicket. A century seemed certain, but Lange beat tho ex-Auckland representative with a food length ball when he had scored 91. lendy hit 13 fours and a six. Dunning, 55, and N. Martin, 81. not out, were associated in a partnership which produced some good cricket. Dunning was particularly forceful, hitting six fours. Martin scored with nice strokes through tho covers, and showed a sound defence throughout. His score included 14 fours. J. Mann, a left-hander, did well to score 29, not, out. At stumps Harbour Board bad scored 350 for the loss of seven wickets.

Lonergan Bats Well J. Lonergan, 73, and Inncs, 70, pave Ponsonby a good start in its gamo against Invicta, which made a fine impression against Green Lano the previous week. limes played stylish cricket, using his feet well in playing forward shots, while lie was strong on the leg side. Lonergan took some timo to settlo down, but later played with confidence. Ho is a lefthander, and with coaching should develop into a good batsman, lie hit one six and six fours.

Robcrtshaw hit a six and two fours in his scoro of 19. Lewis, 33 not out, showed his best form yet. His defence was very sound, and his placements well directed. Bennett, 22, and Estoc, 23, also showed improved form. The last-named is likely to do well in senior cricket. Ponsonby was eventually dismissed for 276. Baxter was the most successful bowler for Invicta, taking six wickets for 119 runs, and clean bowling five of his victims. Invicta batted in a bad light and at stumps had lost one wicket for 33. Watkins, 21 not. out, played well.
