"MYSTERY CRUISE"

TRAMPERS ON DUCHESS

Over 400 trampers took part in the second "mystery hiking" cruise of the steamer Duchess yesterday to Waiheke Island. On arrival at Matiatia,. another 200 persons left the vessel for piqnics and private tramps, while the main body of trampers wore taken to Ostend, which was reached at 11.30 °.m.

On arrival, the party was conducted over a tramp of 4£- miles, finishing the day's walk at Matiatia. The Duchess sailed oil the return voyage at. 7 p.m., arriving in the city shortly after eight o'clock.

As a diversion, the ship was attacked by "pirates" just beforo it arrived at Matiatia. Girls dressed as buccaneers attempted to take charge of the decks, but as the vessel reached the wharf were forced to "walk the plank" by a party of young men who boarded the ship.
