WATERFRONT ROAD

MISSION BAY SECTION PAVING WORK STARTED IMPROVEMENT TO DOMAIN Work is now proceeding steadily on the paving of the Mission Bay section of the waterfront road, and when this has been completed there will be a continuous bitumen surface from Campbell's Point to the eastern enrl of St. Heliers Bay. This section of the road, known a s Bice Esplanade, is the only unformed section of the new road, and for many months the state of the surface has been the subject of criticism by motorists. The work now being carried out has been made possible by tho authority just received by the Auckland City Council to raise a loan of £1750 for the relief of unemployment. The intention of the council is to lav down a paving of macadam grouted with bitumen and finished with a coating of bitumen. This is the form of construction employed on the remainder of tho waterfront road.

A start has also been made with the improvement to the Selwyn Domain, lying between Bice Esplanade and tho sea. Tho work being done is the first instalmert of the comprehensive scheme for tho treatment of the domain submitted to the City Council by the city engineer, Mr. J.Tyler, some months ago. A footpath is being made along the road frontage of the domain and a small portion of the domain is being taken at a point opposite Patteson Avenue for an omnibus loading station. Along tho beach frontage a low stone wall is to be built following the contour of the beach, and the whole area of the domain is being levelled to improve it as a playing field. A broad path is to be formed across the area from the omnibus station to the beach, but the additional paths provided for in tho plan are to be left in the meantime. Clumps of shelter trees are also to be planted to give shelter to picnic parties, but the trees will be so placed that they will not interfere with the playing areas. The plan included two attractively-designed bathing-sheds to take the place of the present unsightly iron sheds, two shelters for bus passengers, and a bandstand, but none of these will be built in the meantime.
