THE NEW CONTEST

SUGGESTIONS FOR RHUBARB A HEALTHFUL FRUIT Rhubarb is now in season and the competition this week vrill show what can be done with it. If its dietetic and medicinal values were more generally understood, it is probable that the housewife would exercise moro ingenuity in its use than she often does. As a general rule, nothing more is done with it than to stew it, make it into a pie or use it in some combination with other fruit to make jam. As a matter of fact, rhubarb ler.ds itself to a variety of uses and at this time of the year it should be made the most of for its purifying effects upon the system. If the cook of the family would but concentrate upon the more out-of-the-way methods of using it, there would be fewer protests from her household, and she would realise what a standby is the homely rhubarb. Th© conditions are as follows: — COMPETITION No. 16 First prize, £1 Is; second prize, 10s 6d. Four Original Ways of Using Rhubarb, these to include a Conserve, a Beverage, a Chutney and a Hot or Cold Pudding. As before, the prizes offered are one guinea for the first and half a guinea for the second. Other meritorious entries will be accepted at the rate of 2s 6d each and published. The judging will be carried out by Mrs. A. M. Mann, lady demonstrator at the Auckland Gas Company's cookery department. Recipes may be written or typed. If not typed, they should be written clearly in ink on one side of the paper only. The name and full address of the competitor, including street and house num ber, should be written on a separate slip of paper. Entries should be addressed: New Zealand Herald, Auckland, and competitors are asked to write on the outside of the envelope "Cookery Competition No. 16." Entries will be received up to the last mail on Friday night, November 4, and the announcement of the winning competitors will be made on Wednesday. November 9.
