TRIALS AT TAKANINI

PILLOW FIGHT'S FAST FIVE

A VERY IMPRESSIVE GALLOP

MITCHELSON CUP CANDIDATES

Tho weather was fino and the track fast for training operations at Takanini on Saturday, when some good gallops were recorded on tho inside grass. Greek Gold (Taylor) and Ilolly Lu (Jones) were sent six furlongs, with Exaggeration (Gilmer) joining in over the last five. Greek Gold finished a neck in front o£ Exaggeration, with Ilolly Lu four lengths away, in 1.14 3-5, the last fivo furlongs taking 1.1 3-5. Both Greek Gold and Exaggeration did their work in very pleasing style. Tea Trader (Walters) alone ran a mile in 1.41 4-5, tho last fivo furlongs in 1.5. This colt looks better for recent racing and lie finished his task in good utyle. Bugle Call (Grico) and Helium (Wynd) were not bustled while running a circuit, tho last fix furlongs in 1.23 3-5. Bugle Call could havo done a lot better.

Expectancy (Jones) jumped away a clear ahead of Coronis (Moore), Gold Pcckot (Gilm&r) and tho Weathorvane — Sennight colt (Gray), but the quartet finished abreast in 50 l-ss. Gold Pocket and tho Weathervano colt appeared to finish best.

High Comedy (Walters) was a neck in front of.,Speedniint (Edwards) at tho end of half a milo in 49 4-ss. Both finished strongly, and look better for their outings at Avondalo. Great Emblem (Manson) and Chief Joy (Moore) went off at tho mile post and wero joined at the seven furlongs by Imperial Prince (Taylor), tho last-named finishing on terms with Great Emblem, with Chief Joy four lengths away. The mile occupied 1.44 1-5, and tho last seven furlongs 1.29 4-5, a good gallop. Great Emblem was hanging on in fino style at tho end, und he is shaping like a stayer in all li is gallops. Imperial Prince showed one of, his good efforts, but Chief Joy faded away at the finish. Best Mile ol the Morning Royal Artist (Walters), with Lady Carrington (Edwards) to assist over the last half-mile, ran tho best mile of tho morning, to finish with the mare in 1.43 2-5. The first half-mile was run in 51 4-ss, and the last half-mile in 51 3-ss. Tho Mitohelson Cup candidate moved freely all tho way and Lwiy Carrington also sprinted freely. Then-' ivas nothing between Gay Marigold (Gilmer) and Prolyxo (Moore) at the end of six furlongs in 1.15 3-5, a nice gallop for hacks. Both failed at Avondale, but they may do better in the rear future. Lord Willonyx (Forsyth) just beat Eldora (Manson) over five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. 11c failed to show up at Cambridge, after being slow away, but he can bo expected to do better at later country meetings. Pillow Fight (Gray) started about eight lengths behind Eldora and Lord Willonyx. and finished in front of them after running fivo furlongs in 1.2 2-5. Ho was pulling up at tho end, and could have done a lot better. Every gallop ho does is more pleasing than its predecessor, and ho is certainly a great horse. It will be surprising if he doos not beat tho three-year-olds in tho Great Northern Guineas more easily than he did in the Avondalo classic. Lady Vane (Mclnally). Foulwind (Craig) and Bisclioff (Gray) were in that order at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 2-5. Lady Vane and Foulwind aro working usefully and J. L. Gray intends taking them to Whangarei, where the classes should suit them. Huntingdon and Palace Thespis (Gray), Bell Topper (McFarlane) and Alignment (Clifford) were bunched at the end of fivo furlongs in 1.3 2-5. All worked freely, with the two-year-old holding his own nicely with the older horses. Thespis is to take his place in the Mitche!aon Cup field. Ho appears to bo quite fit after his Avondale exertions, which were not as good as his previous track-work suggested they might be. Miss Rewa (Crowley) ran five furlongs in 1.4 2-5, without having anything in reserve. Reviver was to havo gone three furlongs, but her rider mistook the disc and she could not be timed. Gay Sheila (Edwards) and Stnr Artist (Walters) were sent half a mile, the former moving attractively to record 49 3-. r >s. Star Artist, who was allowed to take it easily, registered 52 2-ss. Both fillies should race Well in coming engagements. Huntingdon (Gray) was just in front of Palnro (Oihn.er) at tho end of nix furlongs on the plough in 1.17. Both horses worked well. Huntingdon going strongly at the finish. Princess Star sprinted up the straight on the plough, Knd Arch Ruler and Amber Link did a similar .task. All three look well, Arch Ruler appearing to have thrown off the soreness that troubled him a week ago. Principal (Jones) worked lazily over a found on tho plough, the last six furlongs taking 1.24 3-5. St. Ames (Mellroy) iumped four hurdles cleanly ond well, and Tnpstar (Oriee) performed a similar task in good style, apart from getting a bit close lo the third one.

TE AWAMTJTTJ GALLOPS

HALF-MILE BY LUCIDUS

KING'S KNAVE AND SOLOIST

[from our own correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Saturday Tho courso proper was availablo for fast work at To Awamutu this morning, the older horses working about 30ft. out from the rails, vhilo tho two-year-olds were allowed to go right on the inside between the seven and the three furlongs posts. The going was good and some smart efforts were recorded.

King's Knave (Stokes) and Soloist (Cameron) finished together at the end of four furlongs in 51s, a good gallop. They did their work well. Lucidus (Tuohey) worked very freely and showed rare dasli over half a mile in 50s. Considering the distance he was out from the rails, this was a fine effort. Marechal (Baker) was going very comfortably to run half a mile in 555. lie looks well.

Trishna (Paul) was of no use to Run (Baker) in n sprint down the straight. Tliey repeated the task, and _ Ruri beat Trishna even more easily. Ruri. who is by Surveyor, hit out in great style. Tho Chief Ruler—Miss Sphinx filly (Bnssett) and To Wnipu (Campbell) placed four furlongs behind in 535. finishing on terms. Te Wnipu is brightening up, but has not developed much size. Kurapao (Baker) led Transaction (Bowan) for the first two furlongs of a halfmile sprint, but they finished together in 51 3-ss. Both worked well, and it was a good effort for horses of their class. Jumping away from tho top of the straight, Limeon (Brown) nnd Jonathan '(McKenzic) went once round. They were not after time, and after going tho first lialf in 58s, completed a. mile in 1.54. Erination (Baker) jumped off just past tho five-furlong peg and was timed to run homo from tho half-mile in 535. Pclagia (Sullivan) and Foreign Money (Bossett) were together at tho end of fivo furlongs in 1.5. They were not asked to do their best and went nicely. Four two-yenr-olds made use of the going next to the rails. Trickling Waters (Tuohey) and tho King Lu—All Win gelding (Cameron) strodo over three furlongs in 41s. Tho King Lu gelding has been named Rex Victor.

Musciuil (Rowan), the Muakctoon filly in A. Rowan's stable, and Master Rex (Bassett) also recorded 41s for three furlongs. Protomint (Rowan) and Emancipation (Brissett) worked together on 'the plough, Quickening up over the last half-mile in 575. Emancipation has taken no harm from his racing at Cambridge. A number of horses did useful work on 'the plough, including Eager Rose, Arawa Rose,' Kanapa, Kir Muek, Miss Lorraino and T?"no Lupin. The General Lntonr—March gelding Tmpasto, the Cray Shield—Pel-sis colt- and the Muskcitoon—Gold Beauty colt were given steady work on the hurdle track.
