THE HARBOUR BRIDGE
Sir, —As a shareholder in the Harbour Bridge Company who has kept himself in fairly close touch with the company's affairs, I am left wondering where your correspondent "Dictys" gets his information. Who told him that the "charter" was granted to the company "on behalf of the City and Province of Auckland ?" So far as I remember the "City and Province of Auckland" ridiculed, or ignored, or opposed the proposition when it was thought that the scheme would never be brought to a successful conclusion. AVho has "deemed" rightly or wrongly, "that it is a Dominion proposition ?" Nobody with a knowledge of the facts. What have the directors, elected or official, ever said or done to justify the absurd statement that they "assume" fo be "proprietors of the charter?" What is it that is to be under "competent control?"—the "charter?" the proprietors? the Dominion proposition ? The Rodney and Whangarei Councils had plenty of chance to help the bridge project forward, but, so far, have done nothing, in spite of their being made aware how "vitally concerned" they were. Like the ''City and Province of Auckland," the whole northern peninsula has not moved a finger to confer the great boon of the bridge upon themselves, but have allowed a few enthusiasts to struggle on, and. it is to be hoped, succeed in conferring this boon on many thousands now, and upon millions in the future. Thomas Farrell.
