WORK AT COX'S CREEK

RECLAIMING TIDAL FLAT VALUABLE IMPROVEMENTS TENNIS COURTS AND PAVILION A steadily-growing improvement that promises to be of considerable benefit to tlie residents in tlie locality is being carried out at the western end of 1 lie Cox's Creek reserve, on the landward side of the seawall. Various plans have been prepared for the filling in of this tidal flat, many acres in extent, but the heavy cost involved has prevented tlio City Council from proceeding with any of them. Instead of dealing with the whole area at once the council has commenced filling from the western end, using clinker from the city destructor, and other surplus filling. Already an area large enough for four full-sized tennis courts has been prepared and two of the courts prepared with a hard surface are in use. Two more courts are now in course of preparation and should be ready fur use by Labour Day. Satisfactory arrangements have been mado by 1 lie City Council with local residents, who have formed a tennis club and have leased the four courts at a rental that fully reimburses the council for its outlay. The council had placed a small sum on the estimates for the erection of a building containing dressing rooms, but the club, known as the West End Tennis Club, has provided sufficient additional money to enable a much more convenient and attractive building to bo erected. Iu consequence of this arrangement the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, has had plans prepared for an attractive two-storey pavilion and the building is well in hand. The lower floor is to contain dressing rooms, while the central portion is occupied by a largo common room to which is attached a well-equipped kitchen. The whole of tlio top floor, measuring 32ft. by 16ft., is taken up bv a room suitable for club meetings or social functions.
