MINISTER TO CANADA
RESIGNATION ACCEPTED PART IN WATERWAY TREATY WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 The President, Mr. Hoover, to-day accepted the resignation of Mr. Hanford MacNider, United States Minister to Canada. At the same time he congratulated him upon his part in the consummation of the St. Lawrence W'aterwaj Treaty.
Mr. Hanford McNider was appointed to the post from which he has now. resigned on May 21, 1930. lie is 43 years old. Ho came into prominence first as National Commander of the American Legion and later as Assistant Secretary of War. rlo resigned the Secretaryship somo time before the electoral campaign of 1928, and there is little doubt that, ho cherished the ambition at the time to be. nominated for Vice-President on the Republican ticket. For some time he was head of a bank in Mason City. lowa, controlled by Ins father, and the fact that, his father was born in Canada was mentioned as giving a certain sentimental fitness to the manner of the son's return to public life 111 1930 Mr. McNider was a strong supporter of tlie St. Lawrence waterway project and made the consummation of this plan, through a Canadian-United States agreement, the major purpose of his period of office.
