FAR EAST CRISIS
JAPAN-MANCHUKUO TREATY DESPONDENCY AT NANKING (Received September 3. 12.25 a.m.) .SHANGHAI. Sept. 2 An announcement comes from authoritative sources that a new treaty between Japan and Manchukuo is to be signed on September 15. The treaty is said to guarantee mutual respect for territorial sovereignty, which gives Japan tho right to station troops throughout Manchuria. It is stated also that Japan undertakes both tlio internal and external defence of Manchukuo. The receipt of t this information about the treaty at Nanking realises the phinesd Government's worst fears. The capital is plunged into despondency and is even bewailing the impotence of the League of Nations.
MUKDEN OCCUPATION ANNIVERSARY APPROACHES CHINESE HUMILIATION DAY SHANGHAI, Sept. 1 The National Government has issued orders to all provincial authorities strictly to observe September 18 as a national day of humiliation, being the anniversary of the Japanese occupation of Mukden.

CURBING LAWLESSNESS ACTION BY THE MAYOR SHANGHAI. Sept. 1 The Mayor of Greater Shanghai, in response to the Japanese naval ciommander's protest yesterday, has proclaimed his intention of suppressing all anti-Japanese lawlessness and curbing rumour-mongers to the fullest extent. The Chinese community remains .calm. Nevertheless the exodus of Chinese from the. Chapei region and surrounding districts into the foreign areas continues, from some unaccountable cause. It is largely attributable, however, to the movements of Japanese patrols and armoured cars nightly in the vicinity of the old battleground. ______
