WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Awhita.—The fxnt meeting of the newly-farmed institute was held last week and was presided over by Mrs. Colbeck, the president. Buckland.—The following officers were elected for the newly-formed branch:— Pnsaridenfc, Mrs. Lewis: secretary, Mrs. Hewitt; treasurer. Miss Piggott; committee, Mesdames Bceher, Shaw. Stringer, Sceenson. Walker, Hamer, Seeiey, Danes and Graham. Mrs. J. H. Wyatt, of Pukekohe Institute, addressed the gathering. Eaipara Flats. —Mrs. Linton, and -Mrs. Mack ay were elected delegates to attend the conference in October. A demonstration of making raffia Sowers was given by .Mrs. White. Mrs. S. Heed and Miss Hood ware the hostesses. Kame.—A two-act play, followed ■ by songs by Mrs. .Andrews, Miss Whiteman and Miss Strong, were much appreciated at a recent meeting. A demonstration of wool work was driven by Mrs. Whiteman. A comoetition for the most useful article made trom one yard of cretonne was won by Mrs. Lowe. Ngararatarraa-Matarau.—A reading on " Rock Gardens" was given by. Mrs. Brown, and the roll-call cf "Floriculture" brought forth helpful hints on hedgeplanting and other garden work. Cuttings and plants were exchanged. Ohinewai.—A demonstration of paperflower making was given by Mrs. W. Krookii, of Knnrty. who also exhibited articles made from plaited crepe paper. The hostesses were -Mrs. ami Misa Fergasson. Omokoroa.—A demonstration of making children's socks from adults* socks was given by Mrs. Griffiths. Eight new members were enrclied. The hostesses were 3lrs, Kirk, Mrs. Edmondson and Miss Cato. Pnkekohe.—Mrs. J. H. Wyatt and lln. G. C. Reveil were elected delegates to attend the October conference., while Mrs. Wyatt was nominated for the executive committee oc the Auckland Federation and Mrs. Harvey. Mrs. Lawson and Mrs. Snell were appointed a committee to visit the sick- It was decided that members should undertake some beautifying work in the town. A lecture was given" by Mr. R. C. Clark, of Wesley College, on the aims of the Workers' Education Association. Mrs. Older, of Onewbero, demonstrated the carding and spinning of wool, and Mrs. Wyatt demonstrated wool for practical use from the fieece. Tatarariki. —An address on " General Methods in Cooking" was given by Mrs. N". MeLeod, who aiao displayed and gave instructions with each exhibit some beautiful wool work, fancy work and a sample of e!d silk stockings made into a mat. The hostesses were Mrs. T. Newport and Miss Rosa. Te Puke.—A demonstration of making children's socks from old stockings was given by Mrs. Crowley. A play circie was formed with Miss Chappefi as leader. A competition for plain scones was won by Mrs. McKenzie, with Mrs. Burt second. Songs were sung by Miss J. Palmer. Wells ford. —A musical parcel competition was won by Mrs. Miller, and other competitions by Miss Robinson and Mrs. Spindlei*. Mrs. Partington rendered a solo. The hostesses were Mrs. Kenealy, Mrs. Shaw, Mr 3. Smith and Mrs. Potter. Whitikahn. —The first meeting was held of the newly-formed institute. Mrs. Boyce demonstrated art needlework with wool. The hostesses were Mrs. Brown, Mrs. C'urphv, Mrs. Cajteiey and Mis 3 A. Law.
