FRANKTON SALEYARDS
PETITION FOR REMOVAL, COUNCIL TO OBTAIN REPORT [from our own correspondent] - HAMILTON. Thursday The petition for the removal of the Frankton saleyards from their present site, which was received recently from a number of residents in the neighbourhood by tho Hamilton Borough Council, was considered at a special meeting of tho council last evening, when representations from the various interested parties were heard. The Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, presided. Outlining the grounds of the complaints, tho representatives of the petitioners alleged that tho yards were in- an insanitary condition, and there was a consequent nuisance to the neighbourhood. The stock on the roads, it was stated, caused damage to property and footpaths, and also constituted a serious danger to pedestrians oil sale days.
Representatives of the butchers and the' Waikato Saleyards Company, Limited, expressed opposition to the proposal. The auctioneering firms were stated to regard the matter in a neutral light. Dr. J. Boyd, medical officer of health at Auckland, said the Health Department took no exception to the_ existing yards.. In many other towns in New Zealand the yards were in similar positions. He did not think there was any risk from a health point of view. After considering the matter in committee, the council passed the following resolutions to be submitted for confirmation at the next ordinary meeting:—That the council recognises the present yards' are not a permanency, but does not see its way clear to take any action in the meantime; that the attention of the sanitary and traffic inspectors be drawn to the petitioners' complaints, and that * committee be set up to consider the question and report at the first meeting of the council in December.
