UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEMES

Sir, —My letter, as published in Wednesday's Herald, was not by any means complete. My suggestion is that the Government grant loans to any individual or individuals for any sound undertaking where the spending of the loan will create new permanent work for the unemployed. The sum lent would depend entirely upon how many new jobs would bo created. The scheme 'need not necessarily apply to land only. A man in business who, by utilising a loan could employ for all time more men, would be eligible. Tho scheme is to lend money to create permanent employment, against tlio past method of giving away, and wasting money on works which have not absorbed the unemployed permanently.. In other words, allow private enterprise to solve our problem. Even if only a percentage of the loans are repaid, as long as the problem is remedied we will be millions better off. Alister Bevin.
