SEVERAL OFFICES VISITED

YOUNp MAN'S ADMISSION

COMMITTAL FOR SENTENCE

A series of charges, including breaking, entering and theft, was admitted by a clerk Ernest Edwin Newton, at present unemployed, when he appeared in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. The accused was arrested last week by Detective J. Hunt.

'Newton pleaded guilty to Bummary charges of stealing two sums of £1 10s, the property of Annie McL. Austin, and £l, the property of Jane Vaughan, tho thefts being from shop tills. He admitted, and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence on the following counts Stealing a cheque valued at 2d, the property of L. R. and C. E. Fearon, at Avondale, on March 23; attempting to obtain £35 17s 6d from L. D. Whitchurch by means of a valueless cheque on May 24 ; breaking and entering the office of the New Lynn Borough Council on June 16 and stealing £2 10s; breaking and entering the office of the Auckland Bus Company, /New Lynn, on July 19 and stealing £22 0s sd; and breaking and entering the office of the Seddon Memorial Technical College on two occasions, stealing the amount of £4 on each date. given by Detective-Sergeant Kelly, who paid that Newton, after taking a cheque from a butcher's shop at Avondale, attempted to cash it at a bank for £35 17s 6d. When the teller went to verify the cheque, Newton left the premises. !Mr. Kelly added that Nowton, after he had stolen £1 10s from a till at a tesiroom, informed the proprietress that he had seen an elderly man leave the shop with his hat pulled over his eyes, and he offered to go in search of the man. Tie amount of £1 10s was taken from the shop on another. occasion, and, at another shop, Newton stole two 10s notes irom the till while the proprietress went to the back of the premises to obtain a pio he ordered.
