URBAN FIRE CONTROL

PROPOSED AUCKLAND BOARD OUTLYING BOROUGH'S POSITION 'f'lie question of whether the Otahuhu Borough Council should seek inclusion in the proposed Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board was discussed at a meeting of the council last evening.

The Mayor, Mr. H. T. Clements, said the Otahuhu Borough Council had not been cited to attend tho recent conference, and it was a question whether it should seek to be linked up in the scheme. In the event of the Fire Board being set up there was a possibility of fire insurance premiums being reduced, and the Borough Council had a duty to the ratepayers to see that whatever concessions were available should be obtained. There •was the question also of additional cost in maintaining the fire station in the borough if it was linked up with Auckland. It might prove more economical to link up now than at a later date.

Mr. J. Trenwilh said lie had been informed that it would not be to the advantage of the district to be associated ■with the proposed board.

After further discussion it was decided to refer the question to the Legal and Finance Committee for a report.
