FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD* THE HARBOUR BRIDGE. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 19, 1882: Some time ago the project of connecting the North Shore and Auckland by means of a bridge thrown across the Waitemata between Shelly Beach and Stokes Point, was put forward, and a bridge designed by Mr. Errington, G.E., was considered to be of a suitable character and within an attainable figure, but the enterprise dropped into oblivion as a nine days' wonder. We understand that the scheme will shortly be brought before the public again under fresh auspices. All arrangements have been Eaade for the demonstration by the trades and labourers of Auckland in regard to the eighthour system, and the display, if the weather is fine, should be a good one. A procession will take place and sports will be held in the Domain. Notwithstanding the advance of the season, building operations in the suburbs are going on as briskly as ever, and it seems as if the demand for residences will never be satisfied, rents continuing as high and as firm as ever. The Governor's unprecedented conduct has already had a bad effect on the haka natives, who, being informed by their pakeha-Maori friends that Mr. Bryce had been turned out of office by the Governor, arranged for a revival of tie monthly meetings at Parihaka to day, bu were dispersed without difficulty by constabulary, who pulled down a e\ whares as a wholesome lesson, alter car fully removing their contents to save e . from damage. The natives beat, a hasiy retreat as soon as they found tha constabulary were in earnest an d that • Bryce was still in command. This ' incident shows what we have narro escaped.
