DAMAGE BY FIRE.
OUTBREAKS IN FAR NORTH. TWO HOUSES DESTROYED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] KAITAIA. Tuesday. A ten-roomed dwelling on the farm of Mr. A mini Wilkinson, half-way between Awanui and Kaitaia, was burned or: Saturday night. A small quantity of furniture and clothing was saved. Mr. Wilkinson and his family were in Kaitaia at the time. There was no wind and a large barn at the back of the house was saved. The house was insured for £I2OO. There was no insurance on the furniture. About midnight on Easter Monday, a four-roomed dwelling at Fairburns, occupied by Mr. R. J. Harrison and owned by Mr. Joseph Rogers, was destroyed by fire. Mr. Harrison and his family were absent. Tho house was insured for £l5O in the Standard office.
BUILDING GUTTED. MATAMATA CLUB PREMISES. [from our own correspondent. ] MATAMATA. Tuesday. The Matamata Club building in Arawa Street East was gutted by fire early this morning. The fire was discovered about 1.40 a.m. by a party returning from a dance. Tlio building was then burning fiercely. The fire brigade had the fire under control in less than an hour, but nothing was saved. Tho building was a concrete one and was erected by tho Arawa Land Company, an effort •being made to secure tho transfer of the licence of the Maketu Hotel, but without success, and tho premises worn "leased to the Matamata Club. Tho contents were insured in tho South British Office.
