THE YEAR'S' PROGRAMME. A meeting of the board of directors of the Auckland Y.W.C.A. was licld yesterday. Tlierc were present Mesdanies A. D. Campbell, Riuld, Wilson, Clarke, Ilay, Kenner, Burnett, Cornes, Mitchell, Webster,. Leonard, Daniels, O'Halloran. Dr. Rowley and Misses Carnaclian, WoodV Good fellow, May Marett, Law arid Lynn. Mrs. Bentliain was granted leave of absence from association activities until the end of March, and three months leave of absence was granted to Mrs. Murdoch, who is prepared, however, to continue her duties in the interval as chairman of the cafeteria committee.
The two secretaries reported' on the Masterton conference. Miss Lynn spoke of the content of the studies used for the discussion groups and paid a tribute to the contribution made in this direction by Miss Jean Stevenson, national general secretary. She outlined the decisions arrived at in the Girl Citizen Council hours which included better programme work in sections to be initiated by the girls membership committee; fostering of an interest in hobbies by varous means revised conditions for enrolment; and the holding of several Dominion events throughout the Girl Citizen movement during the year. Miss Law dealt with matters discussed by the PVderated Club's council and explained the import of the following findings: That the membership committee of clubs must face membership problem; programmes must be varied and well balanced; opportunities mujt be. watched for in order to interest girls in clubs. In this connection it was suggested that a visitors' day be held at next conference when local residents be invited. Other findings were: —That it is not desirable for girls to stay for too long a period in clubs, but that they should pass on to some wider activity within the association; that Y.W.C.A. membership should consist of a cross-section of the community; that sport makes an excellent approach to girls, and that gymnasium and sports girls should be in closer touch with club girls.
It was reported that so far no reduction had been made in the rates, but an appeal was to come before the Assessment Court.
Among the correspondence was a letter referring to the proposed holding of a convention of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand. After a good deal of discussion it was decided to recommend that this was not a favourable time for the holding of such a convention. The general report on association activities included such matters as:—Training school for leaders of girls' activities; the afternoon function, organised by the health and recreation committee, to introduce Miss Searle, the new physical director; staff conference day, which was led by Rev. Bower Black; attendance of association representatives at the meeting af the Unemployment Committee; a wireless talk given by Miss Law; co-operation with the youth council; the re-assembling of clubs for the year; the setting up of the " Every Girl committee;" the gratifying number of transients accommodated at the hostel. Recommendations from sub-committees were taken and the chairmen of departmental committees reported on the meetings, matters of special interest being the house committee's " At Home" on April 6, the membership afternoon on May 5, and the senior department's open house night, which will be of interest to all girls over 13 years, on the evening of April 6.
