EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD.
ESTABLISHING THE UNIVERSITY.
The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of March 16, 1882:
The proceedings of the University Senate yesterday were of great interest. The Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Hector, moved that effect should he given to tlie recommendation of the Royal Commission on Higher Education by the establishment o--11 University college in Auckland, and, in aid of such object, that the hands of the Government should be strengthened by a resolution of the Senate in favour of the employment of the £ISOO voted at the last session of the Assembly for the appointment of at least two professors. The commission recommended two colleges, one at Auckland and the other at Wellington. According to Sir Maurice O'Rorke, the Government, has determined that the first, should be at Auckland,.and the final decision rests with Pajharnent. Only the other day a number of young undergraduates represented to the At-torney-General that, in Auckland, they were wholly destitute of university tuition.
King Tawhiao is paying a visit to Kawhia. One supposed reason is that he has been advised, for party purposes, not to see the Native Minister, the flon. Mr. Bryce, but to wait for the session for a change of government. The Minister is to visit the Waikato district again, is understood that he will not seek, or doeii not particularly desire, an interview with Tawhiao, but will be glad to see hini should a wish for a conference be expressed.
