ACTIVITIES OF Y.M.C.A.
FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. OFFER TO UNEMPLOYED YOUTHS. A decision to set aside two mornings a week, during which unemployed youths under the age of 18 could engage in physical culture in the gymnasium, was reached at a meeting of the directors of the Y.M.C.A. last evening. The directors decided that each morning's recreation should be followed by a ten minutes' talk by a city business man.
The treasurer reported that grave difficulty was being experienced in financing the work of the association, principally on account of the number of members unemployed and the inability of firms and individual well-wishers to make gifts. The directors agreed, with the co-opera-tion of the staff, to maintain the work at the same standard as in previous years, in spite of the necessary staff curtailment and other economies.
The general secretary stated that the association had been allowed a street day in conjunction with another organisation." A recommendation from a special committee for an effort on a large scale to be undertaken in the near future to raise the necessary funds by a shilling collection was approved.
On behalf of the board members, the president, Mr. C. 11. Furness, welcomed the newly-appointed physical director, Mr. J. Bonham.
