FREE RAILWAY PASSES.
TEMPORARILY WITHDRAWN. FIVE AUSTRALIAN SENATORS. The. free gold railway passes that were issued by the Australian Government after tho elections to fivo candidates who were elected to tho Senate, but who will not tako their seats until Juno 30, have been withdrawn. The Minister of Works, Mr. Marr, says that the passes had been issued to tho five Senators-elect without the authority of tho Minister. Tho issue of the passes was in accordance with the practice of sorno previous Administrations. The present Government, however, considered that it had no right to involve the taxpayers in the expenditure of £4OO which would have had to be paid to the State railways for the passes until the five successful candidates were actually sworn in as members of Parliament. A reasonable time had been allowed to those who had visited Canberra for the openings of the Parliament to return to their homes before the passes were withdrawn.
