OVERDUE RATES PENALTY.
POWER OF REMISSION, LEGISLATION SUGGESTED. [Br TELEGRAPH. —PRESS association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A motion that joint application by com. bined local bodies be made to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes,, {or fresh legislation to enable the remission ot the penalty of 10 per cent, on unpaid rates was agreed to by the City Council this evening, and the Finance Committee was empowered to consider the matter. In the discussion it was stated that the City Council had an overdraft of £170.000 secured by rates struck but not yet paid. It was also made clear that the carrying of the resolution would not empower the council to remit the penalty. The Mayor, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, .M.P (J said it would be a mistake for a ratepayer to assume that there was- a prospect of easy escape from the penalty ii legislation vrere passed. The mosj, they could hope for was a slight extension of time and possibly provision to give discretionary ] tower to a council in cases of hardship.
