WHANGAREI.

A group meeting of the institutes in tie Whangarei district was held in the Friendly Societies Hal! on Friday afternoon. There was an attendance < f 30 members, representing Maunu, Hikui ingi, -.Whangarei, Portland, Ruatarigaa, Whareora and Utikura Institutes. Mrs. R. C. M. Harington (Whangarei) presided over the meeting, and introduced the Breaker and guest of the afternoon, Miss A. Kane, who is a. member of the Pionejr Club Institute circle in Wellington. Miss Kane told her hearers that thfi dub circle was a centre for a group of e ght institutes, including Wainui-o-Mata Silverstream, Upper llutt, Stokes Valley and Petone. Considerable discussion irose on the question of the formation )f groups in the North. The Whangarei group has grown so large that it was (bought it could better bo divided into two or more smaller groups. It was decided the time had come when a fedei ition was necessary in North Auckland and a group meeting will be held in /pril to discuss tlio question more fully A remit will probably be forwarded to the bi-annual council meeting of thi Auckland Federation in May. Each institute will bo invited to send a rcpresei tative to the group meeting. Miss Lews, voluntary organiser, will also be invit ;d to attend the meeting.

T1 e dance organised by the combined hockey and football clubs of Towai proved a hu je success, dancers being present from all parts of the surrounding district. Several competition dances were held during the evening, a confetti and balloon da in 3 being exceedingly popular and amusing. The two Monto Carlo waltzes werr won by Miss F. Head ley and Mr. C. O'Neill and Mrs. 1. (ioing and Mr. J. Ferguson. A spot waltz was won by Miss Coilington and Mr. Maxwell. Supper was served, and dancing continued to the popular music of Mr C. Wright's dame band. Mr. James Cotter was in chaise of the iloor arrangements. Tl e members of the Whangarei Rowing Club held a most successful dance in the Pal'ochial Hall Whangarei, last week. Mr. C. Wright's dance band supplied ex cellrnt music, and extras were played by Mis.': Alma Mackay. Novelty dances were won by Miss V. Turnbull and Mr. S. Ros: and Miss E. Peacocke and Mr. H. Ferj.usson. Mr. F. Perkins was in charge of the floor arrangements.
