The committee of the Devonport Welfare League held its first meeting after the holidays at the League rooms Devonport, ft large number of members attending. Mrs. Grahame-Watts presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. D. W. McLean. It was decided to carry on the same work as last year, with the addition of fresh activities that have been approved of. These will be held throughout thp winter in order to raise funds for the league's work.

The Writers' Club held a most enjoyable picnic on Saturday at, Shelly Park. A large number attended and a pleasant time was spent in rambling through the bush and swimming in the sheltered bay. A picnic meal was taken at Mrs. Nello Porter's seaside residence, and in the afternoon an excellent programme was arranged by the younger members. Some clever recitations and monologues were given. For the small folk who were present, Mrs. T. M. Cluett, president, gavi> cine of her child poems.

A children's fancy dress ball was held recently under the auspices of the Waerenga Institute, about 45 children in fancy costumes being present. The prize winners, were:—Maureen Muir and Evylene Carter for the prettiest costumes (Empire and hula girl); Minnie and Ronald Wai'ker, best couple (niggers); most original, Ivelsen Harris as "Topsy"; best humorous costume, Jim Boot as a " swagger." The children were entertained with games and dancing till 10.30. When supper was over the adults commence!! dancing.
