THE GERMAN PRESIDENCY.

Although the result of the first ballot for the German Presidency has been indecisive, the figures give an indication of what may be expected at the second. By only a small margin Marshal von Hindenburg has misled an absolute majority and in Uie next contest he should retain oPice. As the conditions for the second ballot do not prescribe an absolute majority, there is little likelihood of failure: his supporters, enthused by their measure of success, should rally as ardently for the next trial _of strength, wlicreiifi no combination of the opposing parties seems in the slightest degree -practicable. It is strangely true that the second ballot allows of an entirely new lot of nominations, but Hindenburg stated a few days ago -hat, if need be, ho would gladly be, a candidate then, and no other name of general acceptance has been mentioned as a substitute for his, whereas the Nazis, his chief opponents, are bound to run Hitler again. Of the others, it is possible that Duesterburg, the nominee of the Steel Helmets, may withdraw in favour of Hitler ; he is deputy-leader ef the Nationalists, and after being so decisively outdistanced may : persuade his supporters to combine with the Nazis. However, in the determined attitude of the Communists toward Hitler and his party there is an assurance of Hindenburg's return. There will be general relief in Europe if Hindenburg, the monarchist turned loyal democrat, is elected again. Such" a result will encourage international amity.
