WITHDRAWAL OF TOFUA.
Sir, —Your reference to the. above question in Monday's Herald was most interesting, and from a public point of view it is very unfortunate that, owing to falling off in trade it is necessary to withdraw a passenger steamer from a servico which has been maintained for over 50 years. It .seems to mo that the Government is largely responsible for this, as their steamer. Maui Roman; (running at a, considerable loss) lias been competing with the Tofua in the Samoan trade with above result. Of course, the advent of tho Malson steamers in the Fiji trade must also have been a contributing factor. [ have also been informed that our own watersiders have been penalising the Tofua by each labourer demanding and securing payment, for half a day's work which was never performed. It seems incredible (hat our people should so handicap the ship, as it is in the interest of Aucklanders to assist, rather than hinder (he development of their own trade and industries. Shiiter.-
