STREET BETTING CASE.
PENALTY OF £SO IMPOSED. PROSECUTION AT WHAKATANE. [BY TELEUJIArn. —OWN con RESPONDENT.] WHAKATANE. Monday. A charge of street betting was admitted by Joe Plamus, who appeared before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Whakaiano Police Court to-day. Constable Cnmmings said that Plamus was arrested on Saturday afternoon in the Strand, .Whakatane. The police were watching his movements. Accused had been fined £SO for assisting in keeping a common gaming house in Auckland in 1928, and fined for bookmaking at Whakatane in 1930. Plamus stated ho was caught fair. Counsel for accused said that accused was in a small way. Ho had lived in the district for three years and was scrupulous in paying out, not only on betting transactions but on his civil responsibilities. There was very little business in the bookmaking lino. Counsel desired the magistrate not to take the Auckland conviction into account, as accused was a Dalmatian and his friends were only gambling in a friendly way at the time.
The magistrate stated that he must take the Auckland conviction and tho other conviction into account. Accused was fined £SO with costs, 10s.
