THIEF ENTERS HOUSE.
ABSENCE OF THE OWNER. CHEF TO BE SENTENCED. A plea of guilty to a charge of breaking and entering the house of Clinton Royal Haines and stealing clothes, silverware, jewellery and other belongings, valued at £BS, was entered by lan Waterhouse Taylor, aged 25, described as a chef, in the Police Court yesterday. The owner of the property gave evidence that he had been away from homo between January 29 and February 20, and on his return had found his home rifled and the goods missing. Detective Hunt said the police had arrested accused at Rotorua. The goods had mostly been recovered from dealers in Auckland where accused, a woman and another man had pawned them. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., committed accused to the Supreme Court for sentence. On a charge of stealing a cheque valued at £BO, the property of tho Wellington Social Club, accused was remanded to appear at Wellington on Friday. In connection with the first offence, a domestic, Rita Nellie Taylor, aged 23, •was charged with receiving from Taylor and Peter Grove goods to the value of £3O, the property of C. R. Haines, knowing them to have been stolen. She was convicted, and on the recommendation of Major Annie Gordon, was admitted to probation for two years, the first three months to be spent in the Salvation Army Home.
