UNIVERSITY COSTS.
SUGGESTED REDUCTIONS. REVIEW TO BE PREPARED. A memorandum regarding the reductions in expenditure, in the universities suggested by tho National Expenditure Commission was submitted to the council of the Auckland University College yesterday by tho registrar, Mr. if. R. O'Shea. The council decided to obtain a further review of the full text of the report, the commentary to be considered by the finance committee and its opinions announced.
The chairman, Sir George Fowl.ds, said the statement had been drawn up hastily, on account of the limited time available for a complete review, and there were several points which it would perhaps be desirable to consider to a greater extent. Mr. E. H. Northfroft thought the full text of the proposals of the commission should be studied before a criticism was made. He advised this course-instead of an acceptance of tho commentary propared, although ho recognised that the question was one of some urgency. The chairman stated that he was agreeable to Mr. Northcroft's opinion. Some points would be enlarged and an expression of opinion sent to the members of tho commission.
"We must not object just because 'cuts' are suggested, but «c should consider thoroughly what their effect will be," Mr. Northcroft remarked. "If we can administer the college 011 the economies proposed, then we must do so. If we cannot, then we must make representations as to our position."
Mr. A. Burns said it was necessary that reductions should be on a fair basis.
The question was referred to the finance committee, it being decided to obtain a commentary on the full text of the report.
