The efforts of the peace conference have reached a deadlock over the insistence of the Chinese upon the unconditional withdrawal of the Japanese from the occupied area. There has been minor skirmishing at some outer points. The Mayor of Greater Shanghai, Dr. "Wu. has resigned. 11 is action was due to the conflict, of opinions aroused after ho had promised that, the anti Japanese agitation should be ended—tho prospect of which is hourly growing more remote. Although the tension in the International Settlement is relaxing and the curfew period has-been reduced to a volunteer status, the Japanese are still responsible for the- maintenance of order in tho occupied areas. Tho Chapei authorities, however, refuse to render any assistance while the Japanese remain. Since the cessation of hostilities, the Japanese have been occupied in burying the Chineso dead. Some are merely lipping the bodies into abandoned trenches and covering them over with a thin layer of earth.
