WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Kdgecumhe.—The institute met recently when remits for f.ho forthcoming council meeting were discussed and delegates chosen. Miss Giffney, matron of Whakatauo Hospital, gave a most interesting and helpful talk on tho treatment of patients in cases of accident or poisoning and demonstrated the correct method of making and applying poultices. Winners of a spongo sandwich competition were .Mis. Hall, 1; Mrs. Eccles, 2: Miss Gunn, 3. A successful "bring and buy" stall was held for federation funds. The roll call was "A book F can recommend." The hostesses were Mrs. Barr, Airs. Luke and Mrs. L. T. Wilson. Gorclooton.—The institute held its March meeting in the grounds at Woodlands, when a demonstration of papier mache work was given by Mrs. A. I'owe. Mrs. P. Laidlaw was the winner of the best article made from a sugarbag, Mrs. P. 8. Riddell being second. Trcasuro hunts and clock croquet were, enjoyed, and a delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames L. Harmen, T. Newlands, .1. Dalbeth, W. Dalbeth and T. Forsrnan. T he arts and crafts circle, with Mrs. ]). 8. Riddell as convener, met recently. when Miss Joyce Morgan demonstrated tlie making of a macraine basket. Eiderdown quilt making will be demonstrated at the next meeting. Hikurangi.—At a meeting of the institute members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy to Mesdames Sparks and Runeiman, who have suffered recent bereavements. A letter was received from Mr. R. J. Scott, secretary of the. Unemployed Committee, asking (he institute to co-operate with the committee in raising funds. The members decided to hold a street stall and a whist drive in the near future. Musical items were rendered by Mrs. Rogers arid Miss Hirtzel. An exhibition of articles made from old into new were displayed. The judges were Mesdames Hirtzel and Lloyd. The winner was Mrs. A. Lawson. A presentation of a bridal cookery book was made, to Miss Burley. A competition—names of trees—was won by Mrs. Sparks. Regret, was oxpressed at losing Mrs. Anderson from the district. Supper was served by the bos (esses, Mesdames, McOord, Garmcz, Gallan, Wyatt, Runciniaii, Burley.
Hikufaia.—Members of the institutes from Nethertou and Paeroa attended a meeting of the Hikutaia Institute, held at the residenco of Mrs. H. Littlejohn. Mrs. McPiko and Miss Tomkins were winners in a treasure hunt-. The winner of the most points was Mrs. D. Young. Mamaku. —At »tho last meeting of the. institute Mrs. Sibley's resignation was accepted with regret. Mrs. Brennan was appointed temporary president and Mis. Treweek vice-president. Oruru Peri a.—A well attended meeting of the institute was held to meet Miss Lewis, who gave a very interesting address on the institute movements. The winners of the compel it ion—something made from a, fl"iir 1 >ac, which was judged by silent vole—were Miss Simmons 1, Mrs. Walton 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mcsdames Walton, Gribben and Hancock.
Papanioa.— At, a meeting of the institute a prize donated by Mrs. R. MoN aught on for potato growing was won bv Mrs. Evans. In another competition, that of a floating bowl of flowers, the winner was Mrs. Morton. A reading of the second essay for Lord Bledisloe's prize was given by Mrs. Lees and was followed by a, demons! ration of raffia work by Mrs. Crowley, of To Puke, and Mrs. Jackson gave a practical and instructive, illustration of preserving apples by Iho sulphur method. Mrs. Reid was appointed delegate to attend the Bay of Plenty Federation Council meeting at Whakatane. It was decided to send articles to tho Wlinkata.no exhibition. '.l'liß institute was successful in winning first prize in fancy work at the agricultural and pastoral show held at Tauranga recently. Hostesses wero Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Teague. Swanston. —Hostesses at. the monthly meeting of tho Swanston Institute were Mcsdames <T. Taylor and J. Hankwell. A competition for a. child's garment made out, of that of an adult was won by Miss Guy 1, Mrs. Nankivell 2. A garden party was held later in the week at, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. Freeman. The surrounding institutes were well represented, and a number of visitors from Auckland were also present. Carter's orchestra, provided music. Afternoon tea was served by the members, with the assist n tiro of Misses Taylor, Blakely, Buchanan, Penis and Winter. Whakatane.—Remits for tho annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Federation wero discussed at a meeting of the Whakatane Institute. Mesdnmes Guest and Wettenhall were appointed delegates. The competition—best, article made from one yard of cretonne, resulted as follows: Mrs. Stewart 1, Mrs. Orr 2, Miss Ramson 3. The roll call "My favourite song," was well responded to. Mrs. Wilson was tho winner of tho song guessing compel itiori. Whakapirau.—The March meeting of tho institute was held recently. Miss M. Wallis sang and there was an amusing competition which was won by Mrs. Moffatt. Tlie roll call was "A wise saying" and was followed by several games. An enjoyable afternoon wag brought to a close with community singing and afternoon tea.
