COUNTERFEIT FLORINS.
SPURIOUS COINS DETECTED. GOOD IMITATIONS OF GENUINE. A number of counterfeit Australian florins has been discovered in circulation in Auckland, the coins being an excellent imitation of the genuine florin. They all bear the dato 1927. Unlike most counterfeit coins the florins are the same weight as the genuine twoshilling piece, and possess a good ring when dropped. The milling on the edge is similar to a good coin, while the design and lettering on each sido is clearcut. All the coins so far detected are bright in colour, but possess a slightly greasy touch compared to the hard shine of silver. When they are cut or scraped with a knife the lead is easily recognised.
The coins detected have all been paid into city banks, and have come from shops or firms in different parts of Auckland, so thfit the police cannot determine in what suburbs the counterfeiter is operating. The spurious florins are being destroyed by the banks as soon as they are recognised. No (also coins of other denominations have been found in circulation.
